KEN BROADLAND, WOODTURNER

Woodturner Ken Broadland worked as a Conservation Officer on southern Vancouver Island for 29 years after earning his B.Sc. in Resource Management from U.Vic. in 1970.  He began woodturning as a hobby in 1991 and turned his passion into a business following his retirement.

He has been a contributing craftsman at Imagine That! Artisans' Designs (a Duncan craft co-operative) since 1997 and has sold his work in many different craft shows in Qualicum, Nanaimo, the Cowichan Valley and Greater Victoria.

Ken’s skills are self-taught and follow from working with wood on a larger scale, having built two log homes including Heartwood House near Duncan, where he and his wife Jan have lived for over 30 years

Ken’s favourite part of woodturning is what he calls the “treasure hunt” for beautiful wood.  He salvages downed trees with promising woodgrain and turns them into functional pieces of Nature’s artwork.  Each bowl, spoon or cutting-board is unique, and each is finished with food-safe walnut oil and beeswax

In the fall of 2008, Ken opened a delightful studio at Heartwood, where customers can come to shop, talk about wood, and feed the friendly chickadees!  Anyone interested should phone (250-746-5480) or email (heartwood@shaw.ca) for directions and to make sure we’ll be home when you arrive.
